Truth be told

What a beautiful top!  You made that?!  It's gorgeous!  You look great in that top.  It's like sooo totally  flattering.  Fits you perfectly.  Dahling…you look fahbuuulous!

Screeeeeech!  Beep!

Wow…there's a lot of fabric bunching up under your arm in the wrong place.  Do you really want a seam across your chest?  It looks like you have uni-boob.  I vote no!

Nothing like a muslin and honest sewing friends to wake me up!  I was planning on making Vogue 8721, View B for a party I will be attending in December.  I was going to make it in a beautiful red silk, imported from Italy, I purchased from NY Elegant Fabrics in NYC.  It has a really nice texture and drape to it.  I don't remember how much I paid for it, but I do remember thinking when I purchased it that it was pricey.

I love the design.  I am drawn to the unusual shape of it.  However, and unfortunately, that unusual shape does not work for me.  The model on the pattern envelope looks beautiful in it but I am no model!  I am short and busty.

I could work on making adjustments to make it fit better but I don't like it enough on me to make it for the party.  I may visit it again in the future though.

So I am happy to discover in the muslin stage that this top will not work for what I had intended.  Best of all, I have spared my expensive fabric.

My search continues….

  1. Making muslins can be so enlightening! As far as being busty and short, I am with you on that one and while this pattern intrigued me as well, it's not for us petity patooties. Kudos to you for making a muslin and giving it the old hard try.

    1. Thanks! Yes, I agree the design is not ideal for short busty women.

  2. I am very tempted to try to make this but fear it would only look good on flat chested, tall skinny models. I usually like something like this to be very high up under the arm. I just noticed that the pattern picture doesn't have a picture of the model head-on, just from the side. Hmmmmmm....

    1. You are taller and slimmer than I with nice proportions. Give it a try in a muslin if you are really interested. There are a couple of reviewers on PatternReview that liked this top. Yes, I would have liked to see the model head on. I tried mimicking the pose on the pattern cover and contrasted it with the head on shot. Definitely quite a difference!

  3. I am with you! Making a muslin can make you change your mind about a particular pattern, and that is always better when you make that decision before cutting into your expensive fabric!! Kudos to you, I hope you find something far better suited for you.

  4. That's the beauty of the muslin.
You can't say you've never tried it and you can certainly say 'pass - next pattern please'.
Thank you for testing this out. I was curious about it too. This would work on Kyle:)

    1. Muslins are great for trying out styles that are outside my comfort zone. Yes, I agree the top would look great on Kyle.

  5. What an unfortunate result. I do not muslin as much as I should. This is good reminder to do so. You will find a perfect fit for your silk.
